Intimate conversations with locally-based international icons, in collaboration with nearfield.
We kick off in January with happiness expert Nic Marks, to discover how we can all find more happiness in our everyday lives. Fast forward to February, and we welcome Huey Morgan of the Fun Lovin’ Criminals, telling us how he went from the criminal underworld to global superstar. Finally, we welcome Ruth Crilly, who’ll talk us through her comic memoir ‘How Not to be a Supermodel’ and lift the lid on her days as an international fashion model.
Talks are from 19.00 to 20.30 and free to attend (you will still need to pre-book your place).
And it goes without saying we’d love you to stay for supper or a pizza afterwards!
Nic Marks – Finding Happiness
Weds 21st Jan, The King’s Arms in Shaftesbury
Nic Marks is an internationally acclaimed speaker whose TED Talk on happiness has been watched millions of times. His TEDBook A Happiness Manifesto put measuring national wellbeing on the global agenda and transformed the way happiness is measured in the workplace. Nic’s new book, Happiness is a Serious Business, is a modern-day bible on how we can create everyday happiness in our personal and work lives.
On Blue Monday week (some say the most depressing time of the year), join Nic at The King’s Arms for a highly engaging and uplifting talk on why happy people thrive and live their best lives.
Nic will be signing his book ‘Happiness is a Serious Business’ after the talk.
Huey Morgan – The Fun Lovin’ Criminal, in conversation with nearfield
Weds 11th Feb, The Pembroke Arms in Wilton
When Fun Lovin’ Criminals released their smash hit debut album Come Find Yourself in 1996, its fusion of hip-hop, funk, blues and rock quickly saw it become one of the most iconic and influential records of the decade. Now, in his humorous and honest memoir, frontman Huey Morgan describes his remarkable journey from journeyman to rock star. His is a story that begins in the early 1990s in New York, freshly returned from his time in the Marines and struggling to return to regular life. As Huey tries to kickstart his musical career, he finds himself falling into the criminal underworld to get by. But as his band begins – against all the odds – to take off, can he extricate himself before his shot at stardom goes begging?
In this intimate and exclusive conversation, Huey will bring the grit and glamour of 90s New York and the crazy world of rock and roll to vivid life at the Pembroke Arms!
Huey will be signing his book ‘The Fun Lovin’ Criminal’ after the talk.

Ruth Crilly – How Not to be a Supermodel
Weds 11th March, The Manor House Inn in Ditcheat
Journey with Ruth through a rip-roaring, hilarious decade of not-quite-making-it as a supermodel. Fuelled by little more than cigarettes and the stress of her spiralling debt she criss-crosses the world in pursuit of fame and fortune. But how far is she willing to go for this wildly unrealistic dream?
Bridget Jones meets the Devil Wears Prada, How Not to be a Supermodel is a time capsule of a book that dives into one of the world’s most fascinating industries. Offering a glimpse into both the high glamour and juddering reality of a by-gone era, this comic memoir tackles the darkest of subjects with the very lightest touch and injects humour and a heart-warming honesty into a story that could have so easily ended a different way.
Told with unparalleled wit and remarkable detail, this is a talk for anyone who dreams big and aims high but never quite reaches their goal.
Ruth will be signing her book ‘How Not to be a Supermodel’ after the talk.
